Board Caliper E.jpg

E-Flute
Most popular board for E-Commerce mailers,  it offers excellent crush resistance and superior printing surface.  Because of its thin profile and cushioning properties, E-Flute can substitute for conventional folding cartons or solid fiber containers. Ideal for cosmetics, glass, ceramic items and delicate instrument packaging.
It's lightweight and has aproximately 90 flutes per linear foot.

B-Flute
Thicker than E-flute, it's preferred for large shipping cartons, high speed, automatic packing lines and for pads, dividers, partitions and other forms of inner packing.
It has. good compression strength, puncture resistance and  printability.

It has around 49 flutes per linear foot.

PRINT OPTIONS

Package printing is essential when it comes to creating unique packaging that'll catch customer's attention and make an unforgettable unboxing experience. Pacobond offers digital printing directly over the corrugated boards, and lithographic offset printing and/or foil stamping over labels and mounting on corrugated boards.

DIGITAL PRINT

Using UV cured inks and inkjet technology, digital printing prints directly on the corrugated board, offering faster and more economical short to medium runs since  it doesn't use printing plates. Maximum print size is 50" x 120"

OFFSET PRINT

An alternative method to the above is offset lithographic printing onto a label and then mounting on the corrugated board. Large format labels ( maximum 28"x40") can be printed for over all mounting. Offset printing also provides use of Pantone metallic or spot color inks and  possibility of unique film lamination finishes like Soft Touch, Hi-gloss or spot gloss UV over Scuff Free. matte background.

FOIL STAMP

Similar to the lithographic offset printing, artwork can be foil stamped on maximum 28"x40" labels and mounted on the corrugated board.Foil stamp produces effects which are impossible to achieve using traditional ink printing or digital printing. Foils are available in many metallic colors in addition to holographic patterns.

Foil stamping is an effective medium at creating a luxurious and elegant feeling.

Is Your Box Strong Enough?

After going through the long process of creating a product that you’re proud of the last thing that’s probably on your mind is “how strong does my packaging need to be?”. Nevertheless, it is a very important decision. The box you put your product in is what gets it from you to your customer and keeps it safe and in tact along the way.   That being said, the average person doesn’t start out knowing everything about board strength. Corrugated board strength comes from a variety of different places. Your box can be made using different thicknesses such as: single wall, double wall, and triple wall. It can also have different flute types. The most common are A, B, C, and E. The flute is the wavy piece that makes up the middle of corrugated board. A flute is the widest, followed by C, B, and then E. Each board has its strength certified using either a Mullen or Edge Crush Test. But when people start throwing around phrases like 200 pound burst or 32 ECT you may have no idea what they are talking about. A piece of corrugated is not intrinsically Burst or ECT; this only refers to how it is tested and certified in the lab.

What kind of strength does your box need?

Mullen Test

Mullen, or burst test is one of two industry standards for testing corrugated packaging. The Mullen test was the original test used throughout the industry. Mullen tests the liner-boards strength against bursting. This is ideal when you are packing products that would put pressure on small spots. The Mullen test shows how well a board can contain internal forces or withstand external forces. Mullen is used to simulate severe handling. In high speed sorting centers and distribution centers you can test to see if your package could survive the everyday wear and tear. The most common Mullen tested board is 200 pound.

Edge Crush Test

The ECT, or Edge Crush Test, has become more and more popular in recent years. This test looks at how the corrugated will hold up while being stacked. It tests top to bottom compression strength. This is advantageous because most boxes are stacked up for shipping and warehousing. The most common type of ECT sold is 32 ECT, which a lot of people look at as equivalent to 200 Mullen. This is because they have a very similar maximum suggested load. This is okay to assume in some situations, but it is important to remember that they do not test the same things. During an ECT test a small piece of corrugated material is compressed from top to bottom to see how much pressure it can withstand before buckling.

Older isn’t always better

ECT has grown into the most popular way to test corrugated strength because you can find a very similar strength board to its Mullen counterpart, but use less material in doing so. This is because Mullen has strict material guideline on how heavy each piece of material used in the construction must be. ECT is free to use different weights as long as they come together to achieve the right Strength. A 275-pound box may use 14.8% more material than its 44 ECT counterpart. Less material=Less money, which is very appealing to many customers when they don’t necessarily need one test or the other.

The “Flute” describes the structure of the wave shaped cardboard material that makes up a board’s corrugation.

Flutes come in several sizes, known as flute profiles. The standard profiles range from A-flute (the largest) to F-flute and below (micro flutes).

A-flute = 36 flutes/linear foot
B-flute = 49 flutes/linear foot
C-flute = 41 flutes/linear foot
E-flute = 90 flutes/linear foot
F-flute = 128 flutes/linear foot

Generally, larger flutes provide greater strength and cushioning, while smaller flutes have better printability and fold-ability.

Flute profiles can be mixed and matched within a single piece of combined board. CE double wall is durable because of its C-flute layer, while its E-flute layer provides a smooth printing surface. A sheet of material can be made of different thickness of board to manipulate printability, compression and cushioning strengths.

B-Flute

B-Flute, the second flute size adopted by the corrugated industry, has lower arch heights than A and more flutes per foot (49). This means that the medium contacts and supports the liners at a greater number of points, providing a stiff, flat surface for high quality printing and die cutting and with excellent crush resistant properties. B-Flute is also preferred for high speed, automatic packing lines and for pads, dividers, partitions and other forms of inner packing. Complex die cuts and beverage trays are excellent applications for B-Flute as are can cases, wrap-around blanks, glass-to-glass packs and slipsheets. B-Flute is generally combined with lightweight liners but can be used with heavier facings if the need arises.

  • 49 Flutes / Foot

  • good puncture resistance

  • less space consumed in warehouse

  • uses: canned goods, displays

E-Flute

E-Flute has the greatest number of flutes/foot (90) which gives it the greatest crush resistance and the flattest surface for high quality printing applications. The thin board profile of E-Flute (it is one-fourth the thickness of C-Flute) reduces box size and saves storage space. Because of its thin profile and cushioning properties, E-Flute can substitute for conventional folding cartons or solid fiber containers. Examples of E-Flute applications include boxes for cosmetics, glass, ceramic items and delicate instruments. Another growing end-use is the pizza box: a cost effective, printable container for product protection.

  • 90 Flutes / Foot

  • lightweight

  • strong alternative to paper board

  • superior printing surface

  • excellent for custom die cut boxes

  • uses: displays, point of purchase boxes
